Impact at the American Museum of Natural History is an immersive exhibition exploring the forces that have shaped life on Earth, from the asteroid that ended the age of dinosaurs to modern threats to biodiversity. The exhibition combines striking design, world-class dioramas, and interpretive graphics to communicate complex scientific ideas in ways that are immediate, engaging, and memorable.

The goal was to create a layered experience that not only informs but also sparks curiosity and emotional connection, highlighting the beauty and fragility of life on our planet. Visitors are guided through dramatic narratives of destruction, survival, and conservation, providing both historical context and insight into the ongoing challenges facing ecosystems today.

Typographic Design and Visual Identity

The exhibition’s intro and section graphics were built around a bold, typographic system designed to capture attention and guide visitors through complex scientific narratives. Developed collaboratively with the design team, the system establishes hierarchy, clarity, and impact across panels, labels, and environmental graphics, helping the exhibition feel cohesive while emphasizing the urgency and drama of Earth’s changing ecosystems.

Enhancing Models and Dioramas

To complement the museum’s meticulously crafted models and dioramas, we developed graphics that explain biodiversity, speciation, and extinction in visually engaging ways. These elements highlight scientific concepts without overwhelming the displays, giving visitors additional layers of understanding and creating a richer, more interactive storytelling environment.

Featured Sections: Destruction, Deflection, and the 6th Extinction

I worked closely on three core sections of the exhibition. Destruction depicts the immediate aftermath of the asteroid impact, using immersive visuals to communicate its dramatic effects. Deflection explores modern scientific efforts to prevent similar planetary-scale impacts.

The 6th Extinction traces the previous five mass extinctions and contextualizes the current biodiversity crisis, emphasizing both the beauty of life on Earth and the urgent need for conservation. These sections combine narrative, visuals, and data to inspire understanding and stewardship of our planet.
